RoHS Compliance for CNC Machined Components
RoHS Overview and Restricted Substances
One such regulation that is particularly relevant to the industries we serve is the RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, which stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances. As an ISO 9001 accredited engineering company that specialises in precision CNC machining of aluminium components, we understand the importance of producing high quality parts that meet all necessary regulations and standards.
RoHS compliance is a requirement for certain types of electrical and electronic equipment, including lighting and communication equipment. The RoHS Directive ensures that these products do not contain certain hazardous materials that can be harmful to human health or the environment. The RoHS Directive specifies a list of restricted substances that must not be used in the manufacture of these products, which includes:
- Lead (Pb)
- Mercury (Hg)
- Cadmium (Cd)
- Hexavalent chromium (Cr6+)
- Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB)
- Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)
Concentration limits for these substances is identified within the RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, and must not be exceeded in the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment. The specific limits vary depending on the substance and the type of product in question.
In addition to specifying a list of restricted substances, the RoHS Directive also includes an exemption list that allows for the use of these substances in certain situations. For example, the exemption list allows for the use of lead in aluminium alloys that are used in the production of CNC machined components, as long as the concentration of lead does not exceed 0.35% by weight.
RoHS Compliance in Precision CNC Machined Aluminium Components
The majority of the components we produce in-house at Parallel Precision are manufactured from 6082 T6 aluminium, a 6000 series grade of aluminium alloy that is commonly used in a wide range of industries. 6082 T6 aluminium is considered RoHS compliant because it does not contain any of the restricted substances listed in the RoHS Directive above the allowable concentration limits.
We are proud to be a trusted partner for many companies requiring precision CNC machined aluminium components that are fully compliant with the RoHS Directive
Small quantities of hazardous substances within raw materials can be minimised but not avoided completely. When our customers require evidence of compliance or additional traceability of the raw materials, we can provide 3.1 Material Certificates for an additional £45+VAT per component. Please feel welcomed to speak to us if you have similar requirements.
Parallel Precision produces CNC machined aluminium components for customers in a variety of industry sectors, and we are committed to delivering components in compliance with the requirements of the RoHS Directive where required. We have the experience, knowledge, and capabilities to produce parts that are fully compliant with these regulations.
Purchasing your CNC machined components through a trusted supplier with a wealth of knowledge and experience of RoHS compliance, such as Parallel Precision, can save you significant headaches and troubles down the line.
RoHS Compliance in Anodising
Anodising is a safe and environmentally friendly way to protect the surface of aluminium components, improve the corrosion resistance of the machined parts and achieve additional aesthetics such as changing the colour of the component.
Parallel Precision is able to offer RoHS compliant anodising, where the anodising process does not involve the use of any of the restricted substances listed in the RoHS Directive.
